Skateboarding Today

Today, skateboarding culture is still highly influential among American youth, though its popularity has waned since the glory days of Tony Hawk. However, the current generation of skateboarders have certainly proved themselves influential.

Many movies have been made about skateboarding. A recent, highly popular film is Lords of Dogtown, set in Venice, CA. Other popular skateboarding films include Grind and Thrashin'.

Skateboarding has had a great influence on music as well. Virtually every well-known punk rock band has had some experience in skateboarding and has at least one song about skateboarding. In recent times, skateboarding has had some influence on urban music as the activity moves to more urban areas.

Skateboarding has also spawned several video games. The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game series is among the strongest franchises in existence - eight games strong, and that's not counting several remakes and offshoot games. Historically, skateboarding has inspired many popular video games, such as 720 and Skate or Die.
